The CASCAID Advocacy Conference is an opportunity for advocates and activists to come together to exchange academic and practical ideas. The emphasis is on improving advocacy skills by sharing experiences, methods, and ideas related to building awareness, discourse, and grassroots action.
CONFERENCE THEME
CIVILITY AND SOCIETY: Embracing Difference and Moving Forward
This Conference seeks to explore the ways that Civility and Society interact. Whether in the political arena where most persons are consumers of discourse or in interpersonal and group settings where persons speak for themselves the importance of civility is always relevant. A broad range of ideas are invited to provide perspective on how we interact with each other. Examining the roots of incivility, looking at examples, learning how to address incivility, along with finding ways to teach and promote civility are all a part of what the theme embraces.
Some areas to spur ideas for consideration of what proposals/workshops/ or papers you may want to consider for submission:
Politics: campaigns and negative advertising, the role of corporate advertising in the political process, polarization of the electoral process, divisiveness on debates on issues, extremist rhetoric
Society: intercultural interactions and tolerance, social protest situations, domestic conflict and violence, immigration, gender and communication differences, implications of social media
Media: desensitization to violence, talk radio and impact of pundits, concentration of viewpoints, corporate speech, reality TV,
Innovative contributions are welcomed! All academic disciplines are welcomed!
Who Should Submit? (see the "submission tab" above for more info!)
We seek original works and ideas from all persons.
While conferences usually are designed for the participation of academics, we also encourage community members at large with interest in the issue to consider submitting ideas for participating.
For members of the academic community we seek Faculty and Graduate students who have an interest in chairing or moderating along with paper and panel submissions.
A special invitation is extended to those from non-governmental organizations, community groups, and the activist community.
Undergraduates are particularly encouraged to submit. The top paper submitted by an undergrad will be awarded the CASCAID Contribution to Advocacy Award and a $250 cash scholarship. To be eligible author must be able to attend, and submission should be clearly identified as coming from an undergraduate author.
